A heart-rending and unflinchingly honest account of the emotional complexities of the mother-daughter bond, Motherwell is the final work from the award winning and inspirational journalist. With her acute eye for detail and deft prose, the former Guardian columnist interrogates the psychological inheritance that we receive from our parents and how close family ties can prevent us from achieving cherished goals. Searing and insightful, Motherwell is a triumph of autobiographical writing. Just shy of 18, Deborah Orr left Motherwell – the town she both loved and hated – to go to university. It was a decision her mother railed against from the moment the idea was raised. Win had very little agency in the world, every choice was determined by the men in her life. And strangely, she wanted the same for her daughter. Attending university wasn’t for the likes of the Orr family.

MOTHERWELL is a story about a girl, a family, a time, a place. moving, this is an honest take on the close ties that can bind, hold us back and also set us free.
We chatted with two of the women taking part in the new BBC dating show Pretty Single, which sees six image-obsessed girls stripping away the make-up for their blind dates. When you think about a new dating show made up of 20 and somethings, you maybe don’t think friendship will be the main focus. The six-part show features six image-obsessed girls from Scotland and Northern Ireland looking for love stripping away the mask of make-up they hide behind. Each girl goes on five dates with five different guys completely make-up free.
The remaining women watch the dates unfold from the comfort of their sofa — providing supportive and humorous commentary throughout. Glasgow Live chatted with two of the contestants ahead of the first episode airing on Monday May 25 – Mando from Glasgow, and Pamela from Motherwell. And the defining memory for both girls turned out not to be the dates, but the friendships they made with the other women taking part in the show.
You go in there and there’s a bunch of girls you’ve never met and look like they’ve got it all together. But you realise that everybody is fighting their own insecurities. If I had met them outside the show, I would have been so intimidated and kept away.

The opener came soon after though an own goal. Motherwell then doubled their lead at the perfect time right before the break, the final action of the half seeing a brilliant team goal.
Sinclair drove through the midfield and played in Puller, who had the vision to pick off McLintock for an open goal to give a two-goal lead at half time. McDonald-Nguah added to the scoring with a wonderful drive only a minute into the second half.
